DETROIT SCHOOL OF ARTS RADIO AND TELEVISION CURRICULUM

The Radio and Television Curriculum will provide students with practical, "hands on" experience under the guidance of Detroit Public Television (DPTV) technicians in a state-of-the-art television and radio production facility. Per the Michigan Department of Education Standards, this television curriculum is designed to link student application of technologies to critical thinking and creative expression.

The curriculum is designed for students to "learn by doing." From the freshman year forward, class work will be directedtoward the creation of radio and television programs in a variety of genres. These class projects will underscore the necessity for teamwork, provide working examples of the many career options in radio and television production, and give students opportunities to transfer technological knowledge for life roles.

Juniors and seniors will be "hired" as technicians, producers, editors, and directors to produce performance, documentary, drama, sports, news, and public affairs programs that will be broadcast to all of southeast Michigan on the digital TV channel provided by DPTV. Television curriculum will not only provide graduates with technical proficiencies, but also tangible portfolios of video products that certify the knowledge, capabilities and work ethics required to compete and succeed in the job market and/or on the college campus.
