“DPS Backstage,” is an hour-long showcase of arts in the district.  The program is hosted by DPS students with assistance from Donald Walker, Director of Production and Education.

This edition of DPS backstage features Malik Hakim and Donnamarie Dixon of Communication and Media Arts High School Read Out Loud Spoken Word program and we will hear an interview with University of Michigan School of Music Theater and Dance Professor of Cello and conductor of the Michigan Youth Symphony Maestro Anthony Elliot who recently performed with the Chamber music students of Detroit School of Arts.

This edition of DPS Backstage features the Communication and Media Arts High School and their Read Out Loud Spoken Word program. You will hear two CMA students Javonte Thompson and Ayanna Mathis who are learning the written and performance art of Spoken Word Poetry and hear from Poet, Artist, Teacher Omari Barksdale who volunteers his time energy and artistry helping the students find the artist within.

On this edition Detroit School of Arts Student Kyle Jones interviews DPS graduates and accomplished musicians of the Trisha Moore Quartet. The program also features Cass Tech students and twin sisters Toria and Tierra Holland who host The Civic in Concert on 90.9 WRCJ.

 

DPS BACKSTAGE - November 9, 2011

On this edition music education takes the stage as we will listen to the Linden String Quartet’s Master Class conducted at the Detroit School of Arts! Last month one of the most gifted and promising young string quartets, the Linden String Quartet, participated in a three-day residency program presented by the Chamber Music Society of Detroit.  The residency comprised lecture-demonstrations and master classes at five metro Detroit schools that reached nearly 1,000 students.  DPS participating schools included Renaissance High School, Foreign Language Immersion and Cultural Studies, and Detroit School of Arts. Also in the program will be commentary from the Quartet members who will share their passion for this program, this music and the students who are being impacted. This edition of DPS: Backstage features a broadcast of the announcement of the $1 million dollar donation to be shared with the DPS Foundation to support fine and performing arts and other programs in DPS. The show also features an interview with Ryan Meyers a graduate of the Detroit School of Arts who is now a film maker and choreographer and has a show being featured at the Arts League of Michigan. This edition of DSP Backstage features an interview with Detroit School of Arts vocal instructor and director of the DSA Achievers Ladies Ensemble Connie Malabed and student presidents Chantel Woodard and Danielle Wafer. We will hear several selections from the DSA Achievers Ladies Ensemble as well. Additionally we will hear a performance from the JR King Academy’s Angelic Chorale. DSA student Nathan Alford hosts the program. This edition features an interview with Detroit School of Arts Vocal Instructor and Director Ms. Cheryl Valentine and the President of the DSA male vocal ensemble know as Vision, Mr. Brandon Spencer. DSA student Briana Hernandez hosts the interview. Later in the program we will hear a CD collection of performances from Vision which was dedicated to one of their former members. DPS BACKSTAGE - Decemeber 8, 2010

This edition of DPS: Backstage features the recent performance of the Cass Tech Men’s Glee club and their collaboration with the University of Michigan’s 151 year old Men’s Glee club as a part of a music exchange program called “Brothers in Song”. You can hear interviews with Dr. Cheryl Harden, Cass Tech music instructor and several of the young students of Cass Tech who performed. Also included will be interviews with the members of the University of Michigan’s glee club members talking about their experiences with the Cass Tech students. The program will feature excerpts from the actual performance at Hill Auditorium on November 20th. Also there will be an interview with Rick Sperling founder of the Mosaic Youth Theater about an upcoming performance that features nearly 75 Detroit Public School students.

DPS BACKSTAGE - November 10, 2010

In this edition, we will hear selections for the recently held Battle of the Bands co-sponsored by Detroit Public Schools and local McDonald’s business owners. Stay tuned to the end of the broadcast to find out who won the contest and the terrific prize awarded to them. The show concludes with the DSA broadcast team’s radio version of the “The Wiz”.

DPS BACKSTAGE - October 13, 2010

This premiere episode features the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz "Informances" in the district in May 2010. Interviews include TS Monk son of Thelonious Monk, Vice President of the Jazz Institute Dr. JB Dyas, Former Director of DPS Fine Arts, Ben Pruitt and world renowned saxophonist Bobby Watson. Plus we will hear Bobby Watson perform with the New World Quintet at Renaissance High School.
