The students perform excerpts from Nikki Giovanni’s “Ego-Trippin,” a special tribute to grandmothers created by Maya Angelou, August Wilson’s “Fences”, Langston Hughes’ “Mulatto” and “Dance Mama Dance” by Daniel Beaty. The tribute to mothers is followed by an encore presentation of their performance of “The Wiz.”

Detroit Public Schools Radio kicks off the school year with an interview with Detroit School Board of Education President Dr. Carla Scott. Dr. Scott shares her past experiences as a physician, mother and Peace Corp volunteer and how these experiences brought her to the school board. The show continues with Charles L. Spain Elementary and Middle School Principal Mr. Ronald Alexander. Principal Alexander offers insights to his successes as principal of Spain. Additionally Principal Alexander is joined by his drama teacher Ms. Beth Desoten-Fuchs and student Aesha Carter. The show concludes with a performance from the Renaissance High School Jazz Ensemble.

Principal Ross was one of only 6 winners in the nation and she shares the secrets of her success! DPS Assistant Superintendent of School Leadership, Sharon Appling, will discuss the benefits and challenges of redesigning 5 DPS High Schools.
Renaissance High School Graduate and current Yale University student, Brandon Keeler, shares how he garnered $800,000 dollars in scholarship funds. DPS students will also talk with Jamison Elementary principal David Harris and Jamison Elementary Teacher and Michigan Teacher of the Year Kim Kyff. The program concludes with Detroit Public Schools Director of Curriculum Shirley Brown.

Ms. Nelson interviews Superintendent of Detroit Public Schools Dr. Connie Calloway. They discuss Dr. Calloway's vision for the Detroit Pubic School District and her professional track that has brought her to being DPS' superintendent.
Ms. Bell interviews Dr Denise Davis-Cotton, Principal and Founder of Detroit School of Arts. The two have lively discussion about the Dr. Cotton's background and her mission and vision for DSA. Dr. Cotton demonstrates her oratory skills with an excerpt from Langston Hughes "The Negro Mother".
