The Broadcast curriculum is designed for students to "learn by doing."" through pre-professional Broadcast experiences. From the freshman year forward, class work are directed toward the creation of radio and television programs in a variety of genres. These class projects underscore the necessity for teamwork, provide working examples of the many career options in radio and television production, and give students opportunities to transfer technological knowledge for life roles.

Students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate expertise in all aspects of audio and video production.
  • Develop and write television scripts.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in video and sound editing.
  • Serve in many capacities as a member of a video production crew and/or serve as producer/director for class assignments.
  • Work on a radio and television productions as part of a team.
  • Create computer-generated animation, text, and graphics required for programs.
  • Operate state-of-the-art broadcast technology found in most radio stations.
  • Write and deliver broadcast news, dramas, commercials, promos and public service announcement copy.
  • Edit, mix audio material (i.e. music, talk, sound effects).
  • Discover what is involved in media programming scheduling, audience analysis and general law.
  • Execute the processes involved in radio programming and audio production development.
  • Effectively deliver various forms of broadcast copy.
  • Participate in internship opportunities offered by industry professionals



Students produce the District's Radio and Television Show, "Detroit Public Schools' Radio" which is aired on WRCJ 90.9 fm the first Wednesday of each month.  Detroit Public Schools' Radio is supervised by teachers and staff assigned to Detroit School of Arts.
