The students perform excerpts from August Wilson’s “Fences”, Langston Hughes’ “Mulatto” and George C. Wolf’s “Hairpiece”. There are also performances of Nikki Giovanni’s “Ego-Trippin,” an African American folk tale about the balance of power between men and women and a special tribute to grandmothers created by Maya Angelou. Finally, the team comes together in a performance of Lucille Fletcher’s 1942 thriller “The Hitchhiker”.

The students perform excerpts from Nikki Giovanni’s “Ego-Trippin,” a special tribute to grandmothers created by Maya Angelou, August Wilson’s “Fences”, Langston Hughes’ “Mulatto” and “Dance Mama Dance” by Daniel Beaty. The tribute to mothers is followed by an encore presentation of their performance of “The Wiz.”

DSA Senior Raven Stubbs shares a wonderful conversation with actor, playwright, activist and DSA graduate Connell Brown Jr. The two discuss his performance in "Kwame a River" and what is was like to be a student at Detroit School of Arts nearly a decade ago. Mr. Brown also shares some great advice to aspiring playwrights and actors. Then the DSA Broadcast Team, led by producer and broadcast instructor Marsha Sakwa, presents a thrilling performance of Lucille Fletcher's 1948 radio play "Sorry, Wrong Number." Detroit Public Schools Radio kicks off the school year with an interview with Detroit School Board of Education President Dr. Carla Scott. Dr. Scott shares her past experiences as a physician, mother and Peace Corp volunteer and how these experiences brought her to the school board. The show continues with Charles L. Spain Elementary and Middle School Principal Mr. Ronald Alexander. Principal Alexander offers insights to his successes as principal of Spain. Additionally Principal Alexander is joined by his drama teacher Ms. Beth Desoten-Fuchs and student Aesha Carter. The show concludes with a performance from the Renaissance High School Jazz Ensemble.

This month's Detroit Public Schools Radio program features Principal Nancy Ross of Ronald Brown Academy, the winner of the prestigious "Panasonic School Turnaround Award." Principal Ross was one of only 6 winners in the nation and she shares the secrets of her success! DPS Assistant Superintendent of School Leadership, Sharon Appling, will discuss the benefits and challenges of redesigning 5 DPS High Schools.
Renaissance High School Graduate and current Yale University student, Brandon Keeler, shares how he garnered $800,000 dollars in scholarship funds. Additional guests include teacher Wanda Banks of Ronald Brown Academy, Principal Brenda Belcher of Crockett Technical High School and Crockett graduate Taslima Ahktar. The Detroit Public Schools' Radio program airs the first Wednesday of every month at 7pm on 90.9 WRCJ, a service of Detroit Public Schools and Detroit Public Television.

Wednesday August 8th DPSR program features a discussion on the National Board Certification program. Detroit Public School Students will interview National Board Certified Teacher Program Supervisor Julie Pita, National Board Certified Teachers Michelle Ballard, and Viviana Bonafede.
DPS students will also talk with Jamison Elementary principal David Harris and Jamison Elementary Teacher and Michigan Teacher of the Year Kim Kyff. The program concludes with Detroit Public Schools Director of Curriculum Shirley Brown.

The program features an in-depth discussion on DPS' Career and Technical Education programs with Director Arlene Gibson and Supervisors Harrison Duke and David Robinson. The program also features two graduates of the program Shavon Riley and Shaunton Davis sharing their experiences in Career and Technical Education. Also DPS Chief Financial Officer Joan McCray discusses the mission, purpose and changing scope of the DPS financial department. Student hosts for this program are Gary Hodges, Lindsey Holmes, and Imani Lee with additional student contributors.
The Detroit Public Schools Radio Program will feature newly appointed Deputy Superintendent Sue Carnell and her work for the Detroit Public Schools.

The Detroit Public Schools Radio Program will feature Detroit School of the Arts (DSA) seniors Kimatha Bell and Joanne Nelson as hosts. Ms. Nelson interviews Superintendent of Detroit Public Schools Dr. Connie Calloway. They discuss Dr. Calloway's vision for the Detroit Pubic School District and her professional track that has brought her to being DPS' superintendent.
Ms. Bell interviews Dr Denise Davis-Cotton, Principal and Founder of Detroit School of Arts. The two have lively discussion about the Dr. Cotton's background and her mission and vision for DSA. Dr. Cotton demonstrates her oratory skills with an excerpt from Langston Hughes "The Negro Mother". DSA students Henry May and Jarae Thompkins deliver news and information about the Detroit Public School District throughout the broadcast.
