Roberta Brown & Keith Wissman
Why do you choose to choose to listen to WRCJ over the many stations and streams coming into the region?
Variety – other radio stations and streams (i.e. Sirius/XM) have the same playlist of about 10 songs that are played over and over. WRCJ programs music that features a variety of genres, from Renaissance to Modern, from Miles to Metheny!
Do you have one particularly fond WRCJ program that you enjoy most?
There is not one particular favorite – we listen normally in the morning hours through midday. We love those midday entrees 🙂 We especially enjoy the radio personalities!
You are a generous supporter of WRCJ through your financial gifts. Why is that so significant to you?
We are firm believers in public supported radio. We saw what happened in 1997 when WQRS went off the air – even though the station was making money, it wasn’t ENOUGH money for the media conglomerate that owned it. To help make this current model work, we decided we had to put our money where our mouth – and heart – is!
As you know, WRCJ’s mission is to sustain quality arts, cultural and educational programming for millions of families in southeastern Michigan. How do you see your membership in the Kresge Society as helping WRCJ achieve this mission?
Many of our public educational institutions have either cut arts education out entirely, delayed its introduction in the curriculum, or minimized its offerings. Our membership in the Kresge Society helps to fill in the gap by supporting a radio station anyone can listen to in its offerings/telecasting of live concert/opera events and other arts educational offerings.
What encouragement would you offer to a listener who has not yet engaged with WRCJ as a donor?
You listen to the station – now support it financially! It doesn’t have to be a lot of money. We heard it said in an earlier pledge drive that if everyone who listened to the station just gave $5.00, WRCJ’s financial goals would not only be met but exceeded. Don’t be complacent and let what happened in 1997 happen again. You are supporting classical and jazz music not only in the metropolitan Detroit area, but across the world as well for the many listeners who “tune in” over the internet!
