From the hushed opening of the “Requiem aeternam” to the thunderous cries of the “Dies irae,” Verdi’s Requiem stands among the most powerful choral masterpieces ever composed. Combining the dramatic intensity of opera with the spiritual depth of sacred music, this monumental work was written in memory of Italian poet and novelist Alessandro Manzoni and remains one of the most moving reflections on life, death, and hope.
Music Director Jader Bignamini leads the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and the UMS Choral Union in a one-night-only performance in Ann Arbor’s Hill Auditorium, presented by UMS. Joining them is an extraordinary cast of soloists: South African soprano Vuvu Mpofu, American mezzo-soprano Sasha Cooke, Mexican American tenor René Barbera, and Chinese bass-baritone Shenyang.
