There Will Be Blood (2007) at the Redford Theatre

This contemporary classic “There Will Be Blood” stars Daniel Day Lewis (in his second Academy Award-winning role) as Daniel Plainview, a silver miner turned ‘oil man’ who unrelentingly seeks drillable land with the help of an orphan, played by Dillon Freasier (in his first and only screen appearance), who believes he is his son. When the pair encounters Eli Sunday (Paul Dano), a faith healer who controls the oil-soaked town of Little Boston, their lives become irreversibly embroiled in a bitter struggle of ambition, redemption, and greed.

Operatic and haunting, with spectacular photochemical cinematography by Robert Elswit (for which he won an Academy Award) and featuring a score by Johnny Greenwood (the first of six collaborations with Paul Thomas Anderson), “There Will Be Blood” is a towering achievement that is not to be missed.
