Sunday Swing Set

“Sunday Night Swing Set with Linda Yohn” – Sundays 7p to 9p
Veteran jazz broadcaster Linda Yohn has joined WRCJ for weekly program of swinging jazz standards. Swing is an elusive but essential jazz element.  It is hard to define, but you know it when you hear it.  Swing can be a sweet singer with a tasty small group, a blistering big band, a sublime piano trio, two tenor saxophones pursuing each other riff after riff, a highly syncopated Latin groove, a classic 1940s chestnut, a lusty blues-based vocalist rocking a gutsy big band, a crystalline vibraphone-based improvisation or a current elegant swing ensemble with inspirations and variations.  The possibilities are endless!

WRCJ and Detroit Public Television: WTVS/Channel 56 are in the same organization. Both stations have a strong commitment to jazz on the air. Detroit Public Television has produced many great local jazz programs and segments along with airing PBS programs on jazz. Detroit Public Television is now presenting the 20th anniversary screening “Ken Burns Jazz”. Tonight’s “Swing Set” was a parallel to segments 2 and 3 of “Ken Burns Jazz” covering jazz in the 1920s and early ‘30s. Some fresh music made the mix as well – notably the two introspective pieces by Clifton Anderson and Billy Childs dedicated with reverence to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Thank you for listening and loving jazz on WRCJ and Detroit Public Television.
